In Round 6 of The Mount Gambier Table Tennis Autumn 2021 Season, the cream has started rising to the top as teams pass the halfway mark and start to eye off a finals berth.
A-Grade began with the Leigh Barry’s Assassins taking aim at Chander Jantosh’s Anything IDK. Barry comfortably disposed of Robin Pellen before Jantosh squared the ledger with a four-game victory over Kevin Patzel. Assassins claimed the next four rubbers to take a commanding lead which Anything IDK were unable to recover from, Assassins ultimately prevailing 7 rubbers to 4. The second A-grade match was a much tighter contest, little could separate Sweet & Sour Pork from their Moore Or Less adversaries. The ever-reliable Ben Newman and Scott Davies gave Moore Or Less the perfect start with victories in their respective opening rubbers, however momentum quickly swung Sweet & Sour Pork’s way, the mother and son duo of Sirinat and Travis Sweet producing strong performances to wrest control and steer their team to a 6-5 victory.
B1 produced a massive boilover upset as Sarah Thomson and Rowan Hardcastle’s SRS outfit shocked and completely outplayed their usually-strong McPheest opponents. Hardcastle opened with a strong win over Katrina McPhee before Thomson doubled her team’s advantage with a one-sided rout of Rhys Edwards. David Harris-Jones pulled one back for McPheest with a hard-fought win over Rayelene Hutchesson, however his team had little else to celebrate as SRS coasted to 9-2 win. In the second B1 encounter, Warriors continued their fine form against Top Deck. Aaron McPhee was the standout performer for Warriors, maintaining a clean record in his singles rubbers, whilst for Top Deck Justin Hutchesson fought bravely but he had few winners supporting him. Warriors ran out 7-4 victors. Results were similar in B2 as Hardcore accounted for The Celtics 7-4 and ACL triumphed over Young And Old by the same margin. Celtics player Luke Bremner recorded a clean sheet on the night, whilst for ACL Corey Jeffrey also remained undefeated to guide his team to victory.
In the first C-Grade match, Rollers stunned 3 Of A Kind to come away with a 6-5 victory, whilst The Outcasts prevailed against the Odd Bunch in a modified 2-on-2 encounter. 3 Of A Kind’s Campbell Fox again produced a valiant performance to record a clean sheet, but it wasn’t enough to get his team over the line. The Odd Bunch’s Tom “The Hammer” Horrigan also came away undefeated on the night, but his heroics also could not save his team from defeat, The Outcasts prevailing by 3 rubbers to 2 thanks to even contributions from Nat Harris-Jones and Andrew Schubert.
