Table Tennis Autumn 2021 Week 7

Round 7 of The Mount Gambier Autumn season again displayed some high quality table tennis in all four grades.

A-grade’s matches produced vastly different results, Anything IDK comfortably accounting for Tigers by 8 rubbers to 3, whilst Sweet Sour Pork were pushed to the limits by Leigh Barry’s Assassins, eventually escaping with a 6-5 win. The Sweet combination of Travis and Sirinat, together with teammate Ward Freeman, helped Sweet Sour Pork skip out to a 3-0 lead early before Leigh Barry and Kevin Patzel produced an almighty fightback for Assassins to almost snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. In the end Travis Sweet’s clean sheet and Sirinat’s tense five-game victory over Nick Aston proved the difference. In the other match, Anything IDK’s Chandler Jantosh also remained undefeated in his singles rubbers.

B1 began with Aaron McPhee and Graham Jantosh leading The Warriors into battle against McPheest. The hotly anticipated encounter between McPhee and his mother Katrina playing for the McPheest team lived up to all expectations, mother starting strongly and seemingly having control of the situation with a 2-game lead before youthful exuberance kicked in, Aaron powering to a strong fightback and eventual triumph in 5 thrilling games. This would prove the deciding matchup, Aaron’s Warriors taking out the match by 6 rubbers to 5. In the other B1 contest Colossal Gnomes were inspired by a strong performance by David Fox to a comfortable 7-4 win over Top Deck.

In B2, Felix Owusu led his Rockets team to a commanding 7-4 win over Young And Old while ACL completely outclassed and outplayed The Celtics, cruising to a 8-3 victory. Owusu only dropped one game for the night in a dominant display, whilst for ACL Corey Jeffery also performed strongly to maintain a clean sheet.

In the C-Grade, 3 Of A Kind were without their star No.1 player Campbell Fox, subbed out through illness, and it proved to be very costly for them. Nat Harris-Jones’ Outcasts took full advantage of the opportunity, recording a comfortable 7-4 victory. In the final C-Grade encounter of the evening, Nudee Cook and Tracey Escreet led Fires to a surprisingly dominant victory over Tom Horrigan’s Odd Bunch with surprising ease, Fires taking out the contest 8-3. Cook and Escreet both came away undefeated on the night.
