Table Tennis Autumn 2021 Week 9

The penultimate round of The Mount Gambier Autumn season tossed up more intense contests as teams continue to jostle for a place in the post-season playoffs.

A-Grade heavyweights Anything IDK and Sweet And Sour Pork fought out a tight contest, Travis Sweet’s perfect singles record performance and an enthralling 5-game victory to Kevin Patzel not enough to lift Sweet And Sour Pork to victory as Chandler Jantosh guided Anything IDK to a 6-5 victory. In the other A-Grade match, Moore Or Less recorded a more comfortable result, easing to a 7-4 victory over Tigers on the back of solid performances from Ben Newman and Scott Davies. Leigh Barry fought bravely for Tigers, coming away with a clean sheet in his singles rubbers including a marathon 5-game showstopping victory over Davies in the final rubber of the night.

B1 produced similar results, Colossal Gnomes stumbling over the line to record a 6-5 win over SRS while Top Deck comfortably accounted for McPheest by 7 rubbers to 4. Colossal Gnomes player David Fox was his team’s standout performer on the night, ably supported Rowan Hardcastle. Katrina McPhee also battled manfully for McPheest but had little support from her teammates. SRS player Scott Fartch’s riveting 5-game come-from-behind victory over his Gnomes adversary Cameron Beal wasn’t enough to snatch victory for his team. In B2, The Celtics came away with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Young And Old, led superbly by Jedda Hardcastle who remained undefeated in her singles rubbers. In the other B2 matchup, Rockets were pushed all the way by Hardcore, eventually recording a narrow 6-5 win. Felix Owusu proved the difference for Rockets, producing a perfect singles performance whilst Rob Halleday tried valiantly for Hardcore, including an intense highly skilled 5-game victory over Rockets player James Peake.

In the C-grade The Rollers, led by Chris Turner, rolled over the top of The Fires to the tune of 8 rubbers to 3 despite a huge undefeated performance by Jacob Halleday. The story was similar in the other C-Grade encounter, a flawless singles performance from the Odd Bunch’s Tom Horrigan unable to save his team from a demoralising 8-3 drubbing thanks to an even team performance by 3 Of A kind.
